About Andy Moore

I have been a calligrapher since 2007, working through a combination of exhibitions, events and commissions.

Prior to that, while in other employment, I undertook a variety of calligraphy courses with North Warwickshire College, the Open College of the Arts and University of Surrey at Roehampton. I am a member of the Fine Press Book Association and Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen (having been Secretary for several years).

My own interests in art, architecture, history and literature have provided material and stimulus for work in exhibitions. The first example of this was producing work to complement an exhibition of Bernard Leach and other potters. As a studio pottery fan myself, I am pleased that several potters, Clive Bowen, Joe Finch and the late Phil Rogers all have pottery-related pieces of my calligraphy.

Authors who have work, or who have commissioned work, are architectural historian Malcolm Airs, writers on the Arts and Crafts, Annette Carruthers, Mary Greensted and Barley Roscoe, biographer Michael Bloch, authority on Dylan Thomas, Jeff Towns and columnist and editor Simon Jenkins.

Other early exhibitions included those on John Betjeman at Cowcross Gallery, London, in 2008, Bedford Park in London in 2009, Gavin Maxwell at Bright Water Centre, Skye in 2010 and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge in 2011.

I have since been involved in a range of events that – apart from regular events with the Gloucestershire Guild – have included Art in Action, ABA Rare Book Fair, Bovey Tracey Craft Fair, Ludlow Fine Book Fair, UK Fine Press Book Fair, Works on Paper Art Fair and York National Book Fair.

Gavin Maxwell Museum, Skye; John Betjeman Centre, Wadebridge; Marlborough College; Oxford Preservation Trust and Rycote Chapel, Thame all have work. Two Shakespeare-related pieces, one bought by, and one commissioned by, an American collector, Neale Albert, have been gifted by him to the Yale Centre for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut. A one-off piece of work, Bob Dylan: Early Lyrics was bought by an American bookseller, Rob Rulon-Miller, in order to gift it to the new Bob Dylan Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I have enjoyed demonstrating and/or running workshops for the likes of Churches Conservation Trust, Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden and Landmark Trust. My work has been featured in Cambridge News, Cotswold Life, Country Life, Oxfordshire Life, Oxford Times, The Times, Warwickshire Life, The Betjemanian (a publication of the Betjeman Society) and on BBC Radio.
